Goal and basic flow
Each side starts with 12 men on its first three rows. Ordinary men move one square diagonally forward and capture by jumping an adjacent enemy onto an empty square beyond. You win by capturing all opposing pieces or leaving the opponent with no legal move.
On Playfulo you choose the rules on the start screen. The default is English draughts / American checkers; Spanish damas (damas españolas) is also available. AI, online rooms, and same-device two-player all use the rule set you pick.
English draughts vs Spanish damas
Both use forced captures and multi-jumps, but who moves first and how kings move differ. Mixing the two rulesets is a common beginner mistake.
- English: Black moves first. Kings step one square diagonally forward or back. If several capture paths exist, you may choose among them.
- Spanish: White moves first. Kings (damas) fly along empty diagonals and can capture from a distance. You must take the capture that takes the most pieces, and if tied, the one that takes more kings.
- Board orientation: Spanish play traditionally places the long diagonal on each player’s right; Playfulo shows the board for the rules you selected.
Reading forced captures and multi-jumps
If any capture is available, you must capture. You cannot decline a jump to “stay safe.” Leaving a piece where the opponent can multi-jump will cost several men in one turn.
After a jump, the same piece continues if another jump is available. Before you move, picture where the piece lands and whether the opponent can strike back immediately. Playfulo highlights legal pieces and squares so you can compare branches.
Early setup and making kings
Do not empty your back row too early — those men also slow the opponent from crowning. Crowding only the center invites double threats; hugging only the edge cedes space.
A man that reaches the far row crowns into a king. English kings can retreat; Spanish flying kings pressure the whole board. Escorting your own man while blocking the opponent’s crowning squares is the main midgame theme.
- Keep diagonal connections so neighboring men defend each other.
- Avoid squares that can be captured in two directions after your move.
- Once you have a king, coordinate with remaining men instead of diving in alone.
Common mistakes and practice on Playfulo
Typical errors: missing a forced capture, jumping into a worse position, or assuming Spanish kings move like English kings (or the reverse).
